Amanda Routier , ’ 11 Forensic Science

When I arrived at Bay Path, I knew I wanted to major in forensic science, but I was unsure of a career path. During my internship with the Hartford Police Department’s Crime Scene Division, I soon discovered where my degree can take me.

When I arrived at the Division, I stood out from the other interns simply by my sheer eagerness to learn and help the detectives where needed. My supervisors were impressed with my knowledge of the forensics field as well as my abilities to assist them with crime scene investigations. Working alongside detectives who care about my education as much as I do, I practiced numerous aspects of forensics from dusting for prints and swabbing for DNA at a burglarized home to examining bullet holes in clothing. I even assisted the forensic pathologists—a possible career path for me—as they investigated causes of death. And I have Bay Path College’s hands-on learning to thank for preparing me for this experience and a career I will love.

In part, I credit my academic and internship success to the fact that Bay Path is a women’s undergraduate college. Your classmate understands that education is just as important to you as it is to her. You’re free to say what you want in class, and you don’t feel as if someone is going to judge you. Since Bay Path’s classes are small, you’re given more opportunities to participate in discussions, and professors give you the individual attention you deserve. We all take our education serious, and we understand each others’ needs. Faculty and staff also foster your self-confidence and encourage you to aim high and achieve your dreams. Through my courses and my internship, I am well on my way to a meaningful and fulfilling career in forensics and crime scene investigations.
