Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Call to Serve

Dear Bay Path Community,

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once posed a question that resonates deeply with the values we hold as a University:

"Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'"

Dr. King’s steadfast commitment to nonviolent protest is widely celebrated, but his dedication to actionable change is also vital to his mission. He envisioned a just, humane, peaceful, and equitable world—one where the evils of poverty and racism could be diminished through collective efforts and love.

The work he began continues today. January 20 is a day to celebrate his life and renew our commitment to ask ourselves, “How can I serve others in need?” It’s a moment to renew our efforts to show kindness and empathy throughout the year.

Opportunities to take action are everywhere. You can make a difference through your community, neighborhood, house of worship, or even with a friend in need. Consider volunteering your time, offering assistance, or donating food, money, or clothing to support those in need.

Here are a few suggestions for how you can engage:

  • Volunteer at a local food bank or shelter.
  • Donate winter clothing to those facing the cold without adequate resources.
  • Mentor a young person in your community.
  • Support organizations that promote equity and social justice.

As we reflect on Dr. King’s powerful legacy, let us also embrace his challenge: to transform our words into impactful actions. Together, we can honor his vision by building a community built on service, love, and justice.

In the spirit of Dr. King’s enduring mission, let’s commit to making a difference today and every day.

Carpe Diem!
