H. Serdar Kuyuk, PhD

Adjunct Professor

PhD, Tohoku University

H. Serdar Kuyuk is a visiting scholar at Harvard University. Dr. Kuyuk holds a Ph.D. in earthquake engineering from Tohoku University, Japan. He has undertaken multiple international academic positions. He worked as a postdoc at Earthquake Research Institute, the University of Tokyo, and Berkley Seismo Lab at the University of California Berkeley. He was a researcher at Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institue at Bogazici University and Associate Prof. at Sakarya University, Turkey. His interests lie in the Earthquake Early Warning Systems (EEWS) and applied machine learning applied to disaster science. He is one of the early adopters of neural networks applied to EEWS and unsupervised learning methods to tackle the classification of seismic activities. Dr. Kuyuk recently has developed an index to quantify earthquake intensity where he examines the implementation of sequence modeling in deep learning. He has more than 100 scientific publications and has worked in many international projects. He has given numerous undergrad and graduate courses in engineering and a recipient of prestigious scholarships and fellowships such as the Japanese Ministry of Education, the Institute of International Education, and Europe Union, Marie Curie Action.
