On Saturday, November 16th, the Bay Path Volleyball team held a fundraiser at the MassMutual Center. The Springfield Thunderbirds hosted the Charlotte Checkers that same night. There would be no scoring in the first period, but Charlotte would outshoot the Thunderbirds 9 to 7 until the Thunderbirds prevailed.
Play by Play
2:30 into the second period, the Thunderbirds would get on the board thanks to #26 Simon Robertsson, who got a pass from #7 Leo Loof and #22 Dylan Peterson. That goal would be Robertsson’s first AHL goal. Then, at the 5:57 mark of the second period on the powerplay, #81 Marcus Sylvegard would get a pass from #41 Aleksanteri (Alex) Kaskimaki, and #8 Samuel Johannesson put the Thunderbirds ahead by 2. That would be short-lived due to two penalties on the Thunderbirds, and Charlotte would get on the board thanks to #5 Trevor Carrick on the power play. Heading into the second intermission, the Thunderbirds would be ahead by one goal. Then, it came time for fans to chuck the pucks that they bought from the Volleyball girls. Nobody would win the chuck a puck, but it was a fundraiser for the Volleyball team.
The third period started, and fans were anxious to see what would happen since the Thunderbirds were ahead by a goal. Still, unfortunately, the Checkers would tie the game at the 2:23 mark of the third period thanks to #27 Mark Alscher, who got a pass from #23 Ryan McAllister and #39 Riese Gaber. At the 14:31 mark of the final period, the Thunderbirds and Checkers would get matching penalties: Thunderbirds #5 Tyler Tucker and #39 Riese Gaber every two minutes for roughing.
Thankfully, the Thunderbirds didn’t let that stop them because, thanks to the T-Birds, captain #63 Matthew Peca would get the game-winning goal from a pass from #55 Hunter Skinner. At this point, the Checkers were running out of steam and energy. They pulled their goalie, and #22 Dylan Peterson scored on the empty net at the 19:20 mark of the final period. The Thunderbirds would win the game in front of a nice crowd with a final score of 4-2.
