Despite Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut being known as the quieter areas of their states, there are hidden gems all around. This column will follow as my friends and I explore local museums, restaurants, and communities to uncover fun day trips for you to check out. Although I’m a local of Western Mass, I have friends from the East Coast. Many of these spots are well-known to me—and perhaps to you, too—but they’re still a joy to explore and offer those less familiar with the area a glimpse into life here!
For our first article, we traveled to South Deerfield, Massachusetts—home to Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory. It’s located about 35 miles north (approximately 40 minutes with light traffic) and is just a short drive off Interstate 91.
This fantastic indoor conservatory is home to around 4,000 butterflies of various species, which can fly freely within the greenhouse filled with exotic and extraordinary plants. The conservatory provides educational displays about butterflies, showcasing their intricate transformations from caterpillar to butterfly in a beautiful and respectful nursery. You’re welcome to explore and take pictures in this enchanting atmosphere.
However, the fun doesn’t end with the butterflies. You’ll also find button quail running along the paths inside the conservatory, along with other small birds and turtles roaming about. In the adjacent room, you can see various insects and fascinating bugs (don’t worry—the bugs are kept in enclosures, so there’s no need to be concerned if you’re afraid of them). The building also features a food court and gift shop, making this an ideal day trip for all ages. Feel free to visit with a friend or bring your family!
As a college student, I understand that the costs of activities like this can be a concern, and I think it’s essential to mention it. Once you’re admitted to the conservatory, you can spend as much or as little time there as you like. Admission prices are $10.00 for children (ages 3-17), $16.00 for adults (ages 18-62), and $14.00 for seniors (ages 62 and older). Don’t forget to bring your student ID—students up to age 22 can enjoy admission for just $10.00 with a valid ID!
The "Secret Spots" column in Network News will continue highlighting destinations across Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut.
