“I took an unusual path. I became a mother at 19 and went on to get two master’s degrees and my PhD. I don’t let anything stop me, and this is the message I share with my students,” says Dr. Genevieve Condon, winner of the African American Professors Association’s 2022 Faculty Award. Condon formally received the award at a ceremony held in October.

As a professor of forensic psychology at The American Women’s College, Bay Path’s online program for adult women, Professor Condon has continually worked to develop the program, while carving a niche for herself; creating a role that draws deeply from both her professional and personal experience.

Dr. Condon began her career at Bay Path in 2015 as a professor in the school’s One Day A Week program. A precursor to TAWC, the One Day A Week program brought adult women to Bay Path’s Longmeadow campus each Saturday for a full day of intensive classes, making a college degree an accessible, achievable goal for adult learners; women who tended to work, have families and juggle responsibilities and schedules that made traditional college difficult. It is a population that continues to motivate and inspire her work.

“One of my passions is mentoring students, and part of that is just being vulnerable and saying ‘Hey, I feel you. I hear you. I am there,’” she explains. “I worked full time. I raised a daughter. And I like to be able to discuss that with students and be open about the struggles I had, so that I can help them through theirs. And I think that’s one of the things that sets me apart.”

As an initial member of TAWC’s forensic psychology faculty, Dr. Condon was instrumental in establishing that program, combining the pedagogical expertise gleaned from working with the One Day Program’s adult learners with in-depth knowledge and ongoing passion for her subject matter.

“I received my degree in forensic psychology and law before it was cool,” she laughs. “Before Criminal Minds, Mindhunter, and all the true crime that everyone loves.”

“I see forensic psychology as the bridge between the legal field and psychology. My course explores competency to stand trial, juvenile delinquency, serial killers and profiling. I love it, and my students love it.” Dr. Condon explains. “Most of them are majoring in psychology, and many are looking to go into case management, human services, or something in the criminal justice field, including police work.”

As for what’s next for the unstoppable Dr. Condon, she notes, “I have a unique journey, one that resonates with a lot of our students. I believe in the power of higher education, and I’m actively looking for ways to help more students access that power. Stay tuned!”
