Bay Path University Honors Patricia Pierce with the 2024 President’s Award
At the 2024 Millennium Society Recognition Event, the 2024 President’s Award was presented to Patricia Pierce, Trustee Emerita, a remarkable supporter and donor whose dedication, leadership, and advocacy have profoundly shaped both the University and the greater community. This prestigious award, given annually to an individual who embodies exceptional service and inspiration, was awarded to Pat in recognition of her legacy of leadership, philanthropy, and commitment to higher education.
Raised in a small Nebraska town, Pierce’s Midwestern roots have always shone through in her strong presence and steadfast dedication. Her career in investment management began with early experiences in her grandfather's brokerage office and continued through her studies at Northwestern University. A trailblazer for women in finance, Pat’s quiet determination and confidence enabled her to navigate male-dominated environments and rise to significant heights in the investment world. She retired in 2001 after a highly distinguished career but continued her journey in a new form—through service to others.
A defining moment came when a conversation with Bay Path Trustee Roberta Bolduc led Pat to Bay Path University. She joined the Board of Trustees in 2008, initially serving on the investment committee before rising to leadership roles, including chair of the Board from 2016 to 2019. Her impact extended far beyond standard board responsibilities, reshaping the board’s structure and approach to governance. Introducing technology-driven practices, Pierce encouraged dynamic participation, emphasized transparency, and gave board members a stronger voice in key decision-making processes.
Throughout her tenure, Pat spearheaded initiatives that transformed the University. Her philanthropic spirit led her to underwrite Bay Path’s One America trips for students, support over 100 alumni in attending the Women’s Leadership Conference, and chaired the impactful It Begins Here campaign. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she helped raise over $150,000 for the Finish Line/COVID-19 Student Emergency Relief Fund through a generous pledge and matching donation. In addition, Pierce created the Patricia J. Pierce Student Achievement Fund, the largest bequest in the University’s history, to support online programs and scholarships, championing the cause of adult women in education.
Pat’s commitment to Bay Path’s mission reached into every aspect of the institution. From her emphasis on internships and experiential learning to tackling challenges like college affordability and access for adult women, she helped Bay Path stay ahead of the curve. She was also pivotal in the 2019 presidential search, serving as co-chair and warmly welcoming President Sandra Doran. Her role as a mentor and guide for President Doran further cemented her legacy as an indispensable pillar of support and vision.
To honor Pat’s longstanding connection to her home state of Nebraska, the University planted a Cottonwood tree—Nebraska’s state tree—outside the Ryan Health Science Center. The symbolic gesture celebrates her roots, resilience, and far-reaching influence on Bay Path University.
Reflecting on receiving the President’s Award, Pat shared, “This award recognizes an individual from outside the school who has contributed time, talent, and treasure in an outstanding and meaningful way. I am honored by the award because of its source—Bay Path University. The school has been my passion from my first day as a Trustee. I admire and respect Bay Path University as an extraordinary provider of higher learning and its students as exceptionally talented and committed to seeking success. When the President of Bay Path University gives you the highest compliment, it is important! Thank you.”
Pat Pierce’s contributions will continue to resonate throughout Bay Path, inspiring future generations of students, faculty, and leaders. Her story stands as a testament to the profound impact one individual can have on an entire institution, from shaping its culture of integrity to championing its values and mission.
